This is a practice based course has been designed for foster carer’s working with children and young people to develop Life Story Work. The course materials will provide a framework for carers linking with policies and good practice guidelines. We see children as service users in their own right, and focus on the skills needed to work with them.

One of the most powerful messages that have come out many of the Serious Case Reviews during the past is that workers across all agencies have not demonstrated their abilities to work directly with children. We address the main issues involved with working with children and provide a range of methods of intervention and assessment. This course is interesting, fun and focuses on taking practices to the next level.

We encourage respect for children and recognise that children themselves have a lot to teach us.

course aims and objectives
This course aims to:

Create a safe training environment in which participants can enjoy learning.

Develop working methods and strategies which can enhance the process of working with children and young people, encouraging them to developing their skill, abilities and achievements through different media.

Share and discuss experiences and develop skills learning from each other, and understand that working with children is a crucial part of gaining a picture of the child and their family.

Help delegates to understand the importance of structure, reliability and consistency when undertaking direct work/life story work.

Address the issues around good planning and recording.

Introduce creative ways of working with children and young people in order to meet their needs on many different levels-emotional, physical and developmental.

Raise awareness around issues including, esteem building and resilience, identity, life story work, separation and loss, permanency planning, post trauma work, and the involvement of significant others in this work.

Raise awareness of the need to acknowledge responsible practices which enable children to move forward.

The aim of this training is to equip all parents/carers and adults who work with teenagers to take control and of teenage behaviour to build confidence, self-esteem and skills as well as encourage involvement in the community.

Derbyshire Youth Offending Services originally commissioned this course in response to some of the requirements laid down by the Crime and Disorder Act 1998 and it has been designed to include parents who are the subject of Parenting Orders. The Youth Crime Action Plan 2008 focuses on a ‘Triple Track Approach’ when working with young people and their families and this course assists in meeting the criteria of the new requirements.

Even before any of these Government recommendations most childcare professionals had been struggling for many years with how they could effectively help the parents/carers of young people and were seeking help and advice on handling their teenager’s behaviour. This material was developed by Future trainers with the help of Derby Youth Offending Team and their service users, whilst jointly working with NCH Step-In Family Centre.

During this one day course we will train workers in the use of the materials with parents on an individual basis ranging from low to high level need. Following the training a handbook is provided for you with step by step guides on running each session plus handout materials.

We train up to 25 people on this course, often jointly training Youth Offending Team workers, Social Workers, Family Support Workers, Family Placement Workers, Teachers, Police and Community workers who work within the same community. The advantage of this type of training is that you can develop a joint and consistent approach to families in your area and also share the cost. The course is practice based and offers a down to earth approach which builds confidence and better relationships between teenagers and their parents /carers. This course can also be delivered directly to parents to help them handle their teenagers more effectively.

course aims and objectives

This course aims to enable participants to gain a working knowledge of the Future for Families, Handling Teenage Behaviour approach and is suitable for all front line professionals. The course aims to enable participants to learn by interaction and fun.

By the end of the course, participants will be expected to have:

An understanding of the scope of the course materials, and its application in individual settings.

Familiarity with the ‘Future for Families’ Handling Teenage Behaviour material using practical exercises.

The ability to enable participants to gain knowledge and understanding of teenage behaviour and how to provide a framework for handling that behaviour in a way that parents can relate to and use in family life.

An understanding of the importance and impact that collective responsibility can have in the community on the behaviour of young people.

An understanding that by working with children in this way, relationships can improve, family breakdown can be avoided, and children can be kept safe.

All teachers are committed to enhancing the future for their pupils but sometimes due the behaviour of children and young people in the classroom it can feel like an uphill struggle. We can help!

Can we help your school and your staff team by empowering them to ensure a brighter happier future for pupils? We are offering a 1day training course for up to 50 staff members, larger group sizes can be negotiated as appropriate.

Many school teachers have benefitted from workable techniques for handling children’s behaviour within the classroom. We hope to prevent the unnecessary exclusions of children/young people due to a lack of understanding, knowledge and skills. It is essential to understand that early childhood development and experiences at school can have a profound impact on an individual in later adult life.

course aims & objectives

This course aims to:

Practical day-to-day effective methods of handling and controlling behaviour.

An understanding of why children/young people behave the way they do.

An understanding of how stages of development can impact on behaviour.

Skills and knowledge to handle behaviour in the classroom more competently.

Time to consider the school ethos and policy around handling behaviour to ensure that all staff use a consistent approach.

Confidence in knowing that this approach to managing behaviour has the child/young person’s needs at the heart of all of our responses.

An understanding that changing behaviour is the adults’ responsibility.

An understanding of the different types of behaviour and recognise that many things are not done deliberately just to annoy the adult.

about the course

Recently there has been an increase in emphasis both on a policy and research front relating to the importance of the early years of a child’s life and the necessity for early intervention in order to prevent problems later.

This is a welcome support to those who have worked in early years and acutely understand the impact that the world around a child can have on their development, making them either more resilient and healthy or more fragile throughout their life. We can use this research now, to enhance and endorse our practice and raise the importance and status of early years work.

During the first few years of life, children experience the world in a more complete way than children of any other age. The brain takes in the external world through its system of sight, hearing, smell, touch and taste. This means that infant social, emotional, cognitive, physical and language development are stimulated during multisensory experiences. Infants and toddlers need the opportunity to participate in a world filled with stimulating sights, sounds and people.

This two day course raises the awareness and understanding of these issues, and in a practical way, empowers workers to ensure that children and families that they are working with receive the understanding, skills and empowerment they need to deal with their journey through life.

course aims and objectives

This course aims to:

Provide practical and effective advice to professionals about what children need to navigate their way through life.

Increase understanding and awareness around issues of attachment and resilience.

Give practical skills to empower workers to develop and build attachment and resilience in children and in the settings within which they are working.

An understanding of infant brain development and the practical implications of this.

Understand the vital nutrients for the growing and developing brain.

To address the crucial knowledge needed around child development in the early years.

Understand the interface between ‘Nature’ and ‘Nurture’.

Understand that a child with good attachment is resilient and visa versa.

Give workers practical skills and knowledge about how to build a secure base for a child.

Understand what ‘Attachment Focused Parenting’ involves and how to develop practices in this area.

Gain knowledge about practice strategies that will encourage self esteem and resilience.

Enable workers to develop an ethos and environment that encourages self esteem as part of their approach and team/service culture.
.

This course is aimed to develop awareness of the supervisor’s role in family support services and provide the opportunity to develop skills within the role. Supervision is a vital key to the successful protection of children, and in gaining reflective and objective professional judgments.

This is a two day course and relevant for all who work in a management or supervisory role within any childcare setting.

The lack of good supervision is a common theme within many Serious Case Reviews. The need for clearly defined supervision objectives and standards are essential to make sure that supervision sessions are of consistent standards and expectations. It is a very practical course which will enable everyone to reflect and learn from previous experiences with particular emphasis on recognising professional dangerousness. Supervisors and Supervisee’s should have a greater knowledge of policies, practice standards and procedures that are relevant to our local services within the local authority.

“There is evidence of poor supervision across all agencies, there must be clear lines of accountability, support and time for reflective thinking”. Lord Laming, Progress Report - Baby P. March 2009

course aims and objectives

This course aim to:

Raise awareness of the guidance, policies, research, theory and legislation that impact on, and form the back-cloth to child care supervision.

Provide structured time for reflection, exploration and planning.

Develop the skills and knowledge to enable course participants to recognise dangerous practice through supervision.

Identify the skills required for supervising professionals and how to ensure practices are of a high standard.

“Another great training event - thank you. It was really good to see some lights come on for some of my team”.
Project Manager

“I have more confidence in my knowledge and practice and a highlighted awareness of professional dengerousness”.
Project Worker, Action for Children

“This course will help me to challenge clients and other professionals when I have any concerns regarding a child or family”.
Play Leader, South Wales

“Excellent 2 days very thought provoking. It made me reflect on personal and professional experiences I will aim to improve my practice on all levels”.
Clinical Nurse Specialist, Hampshire

“Excellent trainer, use of scenarios and personal experience very helpful to me”.
Consultant - Accident and Emergency, Portsmouth

“This course has opened my eyes to the reasons why professionals fail to report cases of child abuse. It will certainly change my practice”.
Play & Learn Practitioner, Stoke on Trent

“Two fantastic days of training, really made me think about signs of distress in children and the way families behave, but more than that, the ways professionals can leave a child at risk unwittingly”.
Social Work Manager, Scotland

“This has been the most interesting and informative training that I have been on in 17 years of employment with the Social Work department. I now intend to revisit certain cases and review my practice. I will also share my new found knowledge with my team in order to effect change in their practice. It is a pity that Social Work Assistants in our Reception Services Team do not access this training as they deal on a daily basis with incoming childcare concerns/child protection referals”.
Social Worker, Motherwell

“I found the course to be really interesting. Joy was a really good trainer who made the course enjoyable. After attending the course I am now considering my employment and may change to train to do social work”.
Nursery Manager, Motherwell

“Fantastic course, great information. Will be advising my colleagues to attend course when possible”.
Senior Early Years Worker, Montessori Nursery in Bellshill

“Training should be made available to all staff including unqualified staff and admin”.
Support Worker, North Lanarkshire Council

“Future Childcare Training is always an excellent training course and this one hasn’t failed”.
Project Worker, Barnardos

“It will make me more aware of the different aspects involved in child protection, different issues to look for. Make me feel more confident in dealing with child protection and other agencies”.
Senior Childcare Worker, Lanarkshire Childcare Services

“I am aware of areas of practice where previously I may have been in danger of acting inappropriately and now will be more vigilant when responding to situations”.
Support Worker, North Lanarkshire Council

“This course has helped me to be aware of the areas of practice where children and young people have been left at risk by myself and other agencies. It will also consolidate good practice. All staff should undergo this training, including admin staff and unqualified staff as often these are the first contacts people have with social workers or other agencies”.

about the course

Due to the significant number of child deaths in the U.K. today, this course addresses the critical practice issues and the knowledge and skills necessary to safeguard children. In all child death enquiries there are common themes that with hindsight are obvious mistakes or oversights that affected the decisions professionals made. No childcare professional would consciously leave a child at risk of harm, but yet statistics tell us that between 1 and 2 children are dying every two weeks at the hands of a parent or carer in the UK.

Following the recent serious case review into the death of Baby Peter, Lord Laming has published “The Protection of Children in England: A Progress Report”. Within the report he emphasised the need for all practitioners to be able to recognise the signs of distress in children of all ages but particularly the very young. Lord Laming has clearly stated that it is not so much the structures or systems that have failed, more the individual practice.

Lord Laming in March 2009 said,
“”Please keep me safe!” This simple but profoundly important hope is the very minimum upon which every child and young person should be able to depend”.

In light of Lord Laming’s recommendations, we are offering our Professional Dangerousness “Please Keep Me Safe!” course which addresses the standard of practice when working with children and families. This course programme focuses on providing participants with some time for reflection and learning from the mistake that have been made in the past. Professional dangerousness can occur within the practices of individual workers, within teams of professionals, within entire departments or between agencies. Often professional dangerousness occurs as a direct response to the actions of families where there are childcare concerns, as a result of our own discomfort within our role, or when workers who are responsible for child protection leave the child at risk of significant harm as a result of their assumptions, attitudes or behaviours.

This course is suitable for all childcare professionals at every professional level within social services, health, early years, drugs teams, youth offending teams, education, police, private and voluntary sectors who work with children and families. It addresses the key issues that have emerged from Serious Case Reviews. It aims to develop more confidence in professional assessments and observations, with a view to taking practices to a higher level. Many professionals fail to act on their observations due to a fear that they may be wrong. In all fatal case enquiries all childcare professionals involved are vulnerable, unless their practices are of a high standard and they have taken the necessary steps within their role to safeguard the child. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

aims and objectives

This course aims to:

Raise awareness of the outcomes and lessons learnt from major serious case reviews and enquiries.

Provide structured time for reflection, exploration and planning around safeguarding practices and acknowledge the need for workers to share their feelings, anxieties and experiences.

Recognise the impact stress, anxiety and abuse has on the child’s development, self esteem and behaviour, highlighting the importance of the first years of a child’s life, which form the foundation for all aspects of human growth, relationships and development.

Develop skills in child focused observation and analysis, understanding behaviour, and forming evidence based judgements about the actions we take and the decisions we make.

Recognise professional dangerousness when it occurs in a range of settings and develop strategies to challenge dangerous practices.

Remind childcare professionals about the need for a ‘hands-on’ approach to child focused assessments and be able to communicate with the child on the child’s level. Remembering it is always the child who holds the key.

Address the way families react when child abuse is on our agenda and how their behaviour affects the responses and decisions of professional workers. Professionals need to develop the confidence to investigate, question and challenge.

Acknowledge the significant problems in the day-to-day reality of working across organisational boundaries and cultures with view to developing strong and mature partnerships.

Enable delegates to gain the necessary knowledge and skills to feel more comfortable and confident when challenging the professionalism of ourselves and others, which can include other professionals within the same agency and team, as well professionals involved in the case.

This two day course is for those who work with children including nursery officers, teachers, child minders, foster carers, social workers, family placement workers, community workers etc. We will provide participants with the basic understanding and awareness of our approach to handling children’s behaviour taking into account the issues and pressures of living in 21st century Britain for ‘Looked After Children’. It is designed to impact on the day to day care of children who are not living with their birth parent/s. This material is largely aimed at those who work with younger children from 0 – 8. Participants will receive a pack of course handouts that will assist them in their practice.

We train up to 25 people on this course, often jointly training Health Workers, Social Workers, Nursery Officer, Family Support Workers, Family Placement Workers, Foster Carers, Teachers and Community Workers who work in the same area. The advantage of this type of training is that you can develop a joint and consistent approach to families in your area and also share the cost. The course is practice based and offers a practical down to earth approach which builds confidence. This course has been recommended nationally to the Sure Start initiatives.

course aims and objectives
The aim of this training is to equip professionals to enable carer’s to take control of their children’s behaviour and improve confidence and self-esteem as well as parenting skills ranging from low to high level need. By the end of the course participants would be expected to have:

A working knowledge of the Handling Children’s Behaviour materials.

An understanding of the scope of the materials and to be able to practice the principles within the home setting.

A way to work that aims to prevent placement breakdown and keeps children safe.

Familiarity with the techniques used on the course.

The ability to enable participants to gain knowledge of children’s behaviour and how to provide a framework for handling behaviour that workers and parent’s/carer’s can relate to in daily life.

An understanding of how child development impacts on children’s behaviour, particularly when the child has suffered trauma or loss.

The ability to understand the ways in which accommodated children will seek to let us know how they feel about their lives both now and from the past, and handle the behaviour this evokes with more confidence and empathy.
