about the course:

This two-day course provides childcare workers with the necessary knowledge and skills to deliver our ‘Future For Families’ Handling Teenage Behaviour Parenting Programme to parents and carers in their community, helping them to manage their teenager’s behaviour more effectively.

The course teaches workers how to use the parenting programme to either run parent groups (working with up to 20 parents and carers at a time), or alternatively use the material with parents on an individual basis. On completion of our two-day course, workers are awarded a handbook that provides a step-by-step guide to running each parent session, as well as a book of handout materials, copies of which should be distributed to parents during the sessions.

The aim of this training is to equip all parents/carers and adults who work with teenagers to understand and handle teenage behaviour, to build confidence, self-esteem and skills as well as encourage involvement in the community.

Derbyshire Youth Offending Services originally commissioned this course in response to some of the requirements laid down by the Crime and Disorder Act 1998 and it has been designed to include parents who are the subject of Parenting Orders. The Youth Crime Action Plan 2008 focuses on a ‘Triple Track Approach’ when working with young people and their families and this course assists in meeting the criteria of the new requirements. Even before any of these government recommendations, most childcare professionals had been struggling for many years with how they could effectively help the parents/carers of young people. They had constantly been seeking help and advice on handling their teenager’s behaviour.

We often jointly train youth offending team workers, social workers, family support workers, family placement workers, teachers, police and community workers who work within the same community. The advantage of this type of training is to develop a joint and consistent approach to families and also share the cost. Future Childcare Training Limited requires that only professionals who have undertaken the two-day training course can deliver this material to parent groups. The course is practice based and offers a down to earth approach which builds confidence.

course aims and objectives:

This course aims to enable participants to gain a working knowledge of the ‘Future for Families’, Handling Teenage Behaviour Parenting Programme. After successful completion of the course the participants will be equipped to run their own 8 week course for parents and/or deliver programmes to individual families ranging from low to high level of need. The course aims to enable participants to learn by interaction and fun.

By the end of the course participants will be expected to have:

* An understanding of teenage development and how self esteem impacts on behaviour.

* An understanding of the scope of the course materials and its application in both groups and individual settings.

* A working knowledge of the ‘Future for Families’ Handling Teenage Behaviour Parenting Programme materials.

* Familiarity with the exercises and techniques used on the course and an understanding of how to use these with parents.

* An approach that aims to prevent family breakdown and keep teenagers safe in all aspects of their lives.

* An understanding of teenage behaviour and how to provide a framework for handling behaviour that parents can relate to and use in family life.

* An understanding of the importance and impact that collective responsibility can have in the community on the behaviour of young people.

* Adequate knowledge and skills to set up and run their own ‘Future for Families’ 8 week parenting programme to groups of parents/carers, as well as use the materials within individual family units.

* There is an expectation that workers and parents will complete an evaluation form to enable us to provide evidence concerning the effectiveness of this parenting programme.
