The aim of this training is to equip all parents/carers and adults who work with teenagers to take control and of teenage behaviour to build confidence, self-esteem and skills as well as encourage involvement in the community.
Derbyshire Youth Offending Services originally commissioned this course in response to some of the requirements laid down by the Crime and Disorder Act 1998 and it has been designed to include parents who are the subject of Parenting Orders. The Youth Crime Action Plan 2008 focuses on a ‘Triple Track Approach’ when working with young people and their families and this course assists in meeting the criteria of the new requirements.
Even before any of these Government recommendations most childcare professionals had been struggling for many years with how they could effectively help the parents/carers of young people and were seeking help and advice on handling their teenager’s behaviour. This material was developed by Future trainers with the help of Derby Youth Offending Team and their service users, whilst jointly working with NCH Step-In Family Centre.
During this one day course we will train workers in the use of the materials with parents on an individual basis ranging from low to high level need. Following the training a handbook is provided for you with step by step guides on running each session plus handout materials.
We train up to 25 people on this course, often jointly training Youth Offending Team workers, Social Workers, Family Support Workers, Family Placement Workers, Teachers, Police and Community workers who work within the same community. The advantage of this type of training is that you can develop a joint and consistent approach to families in your area and also share the cost. The course is practice based and offers a down to earth approach which builds confidence and better relationships between teenagers and their parents /carers. This course can also be delivered directly to parents to help them handle their teenagers more effectively.
