This two day course is for those who work with children including nursery officers, teachers, child minders, foster carers, social workers, family placement workers, community workers etc. We will provide participants with the basic understanding and awareness of our approach to handling children’s behaviour taking into account the issues and pressures of living in 21st century Britain for ‘Looked After Children’. It is designed to impact on the day to day care of children who are not living with their birth parent/s. This material is largely aimed at those who work with younger children from 0 – 8. Participants will receive a pack of course handouts that will assist them in their practice.
We train up to 25 people on this course, often jointly training Health Workers, Social Workers, Nursery Officer, Family Support Workers, Family Placement Workers, Foster Carers, Teachers and Community Workers who work in the same area. The advantage of this type of training is that you can develop a joint and consistent approach to families in your area and also share the cost. The course is practice based and offers a practical down to earth approach which builds confidence. This course has been recommended nationally to the Sure Start initiatives.
course aims and objectives
The aim of this training is to equip professionals to enable carer’s to take control of their children’s behaviour and improve confidence and self-esteem as well as parenting skills ranging from low to high level need. By the end of the course participants would be expected to have:
- A working knowledge of the Handling Children’s Behaviour materials.
- An understanding of the scope of the materials and to be able to practice the principles within the home setting.
- A way to work that aims to prevent placement breakdown and keeps children safe.
- Familiarity with the techniques used on the course.
- The ability to enable participants to gain knowledge of children’s behaviour and how to provide a framework for handling behaviour that workers and parent’s/carer’s can relate to in daily life.
- An understanding of how child development impacts on children’s behaviour, particularly when the child has suffered trauma or loss.
- The ability to understand the ways in which accommodated children will seek to let us know how they feel about their lives both now and from the past, and handle the behaviour this evokes with more confidence and empathy.
