Future Childcare Training

working in a residential unit

Working in a Residential UnitIt is crucial for all children, regardless of age, to be given the opportunity to experience stability, security and a sense of belonging so that they can develop appropriately, nourish and maintain their levels of self esteem and overall well being. This is a major task for all carers and becomes increasingly more difficult to achieve as the age of the child and the time spent away from the birth home increases. Workers in Residential Units are under enormous pressure and need recognition, training and practical advice to complete this task successfully.

Offering appropriate care in a Residential Unit is especially difficult due to many factors, some of which may include, numbers of carers involved, circumstances leading residential care as an option, different management styles, government and departmental policies and procedures and often the morale and ethos within the unit itself. These things and others can greatly impact on the service given to the child or young person.

about the course

Following requests from workers in this field we have devised this two-day course which enables workers and managers to raise their awareness of the issues involved and how they impact on the child or young person and to explore practical ways which will enhance the development of the child alongside building the competence and expertise of the staff team.

This course is based on the research and recommendations from work completed by the Government Support Force for Children in Residential Care. It is guaranteed to give best value and has been piloted within a residential unit. This course can stand alone, but is maximised when delivered as part of a whole package of training around skills required in this setting.

course aims and objectives

This course aims to:

  • Provide practical and effective advice to workers on how they can meet the needs of children and young people in a Residential Unit.
  • Raise the awareness of RSWs and SWs at all levels about the real issues involved and heighten their understanding so that they can feel more confident and deal more effectively with this difficult task.
  • Enable workers to create an appropriate ethos in their unit that will not only enhance the life and needs of the child but also the worker.
  • Explore how best to work with other professionals and agencies involved
  • Explore appropriate routines and how best to use team members skills and experiences in a group setting
  • Create a safe learning environment through humour, humanity and warmth which will enable change.
