introduction to safe caring
about the course
This one-day safe caring course aims to familiarise participants with the potential risks associated with caring for children and young people particularly those who present emotional and behavioural concerns. It is particularly important when ‘parenting’ a child who may have experienced trauma, loss and abuse in the past, to formulate clear consistent ways of working with the child/young person, with view to providing a safe environment for all.
We recognise that carers/workers are all individual with different approaches to ‘parenting’. We will enable all participants to develop distinct forms of safe care with which they identify and which holds significance to their lifestyles, family structure, personal values and meets departmental and national requirements.
We will provide a safe environment in which participants can be open and honest about this subject, and will enable participants to make some child focussed action plans which will include other family members/carers.
course aims and objectives
This course aims to:
- Enable participants to develop strategies that will keep the foster child/young person safe from abuse by adults and others.

- Explore the values that the participants and other family members/workers may hold in their own family/unit values in relation to the principles of safe caring.
- Be able to prepare their home and family to provide a safe environment for themselves and the foster child, and be prepared for making adjustments.
- Consider safe caring in respect of the child/young person and their development, and family environment and social interactions to make sure that we fulfil our duty as a ‘parent’ in all aspects of the child’s life.
