handling children’s behaviour with special needs parenting programme
This two-day course teaches childcare workers how to use our Handling Children’s Behaviour with Special Needs Parenting Programme with parents and carers in their community, helping them to manage their children’s behaviour more effectively.
about the course
This course is for childcare professionals who work with parents and carers on how to handle children’s behaviour. This course is based on our ‘Future for Families’ Handling Children’s Behaviour approach which has been tried and tested for over 25 years and takes into account the needs of children and parents across the UK. The materials have been adapted for those professionals who work with parents/carers who have a child with special needs. We look at the latest messages about parenting, behaviour and education, and consider how these things impact on family life in 21st century Britain.
During this two-day course we will train workers in the use of our materials and enable them to work with as many as 20 parents at any one time. The materials can also be used with parents on an individual basis. The aim of the training is to equip professionals to enable parents to understand and take control of their child’s behaviour and improve their self-esteem and confidence. We work from the principle that children are children first, in terms of their behaviour and emotional needs; their special needs are secondary. Following the training workers are provided with a handbook which gives a step-by-step guide to running each parent session. Workers also receive handout materials which can be photocopied and given to parents at each session.
We can train up to 25 childcare professionals on this course, often jointly training health workers, social workers, nursery officers, family support workers, family placement workers, teachers and community workers, who work in the same area. The advantage of this type of training is that you can develop a joint and consistent approach to families in your area and also share the cost. Future Childcare Training Limited requires that only professionals who have undertaken the two-day training course can deliver this material to parent groups. The course is practice based and offers a practical down to earth approach which builds confidence. This course has been recommended nationally to the Sure Start and Flying Start initiatives.
