developing effective recording
about the course
Recording is an essential part of the service all childcare professionals should provide to children and families. All who work with children should be clear about the principles and purpose of record keeping. This one-day course provides participants with the principles of good practice and is delivered in line with policies and legislation.
It is important to appreciate that recording maintains a history for the child or young person, and should highlight any issues or developmental needs, and provides continuity when key workers change. Points covered in this course will include developing skills of recording, understanding how to analyse patterns of behaviour, as well as being able to observe, conceptualise and make action plans.
This course is appropriate for all childcare professionals in any childcare setting and will complement CAF (Common Assessment Framework) training.
course aims & objectives
This course aims to:
- Develop confidence and skills to enable participants to record accurately.
- Understand that it is essential to distinguish between ‘facts’ and ‘professional judgements’, hypotheses, non - factual information and conclusions based on observation and assessment.
- Provide clarity about the purpose of recording and for whom it is being written, working from the principle of ‘open recording’, which would enable children and young people to see and contribute to their records wherever appropriate and possible.
- Assist participants when structuring records and address how to focus on key themes and issues.
- Address key principles around information sharing both within and across agencies.
- Help participants to understand the importance of recording in terms of analysing patterns of behaviour, improvements, problems and needs.
- Provide a framework and methodology for recording which could be used across agencies and which links with current legislation and policies, particularly linking to the Common Framework for Risk Assessment.
- Help delegates to understand that children and young people have a part to play in our record keeping.
