autism: what you need to know
This course is suitable for all childcare professionals or anyone who is interested in knowing more about autism. It looks particularly at the implications of a diagnosis of autism can have on a child and his or her parents and carers. Designed for those who know something of the condition but who may be confused about the variety of labels, theories and treatment programmes that are around. It provides clear explanations and practical suggestions from experienced practitioners.
The course will be presented by Freda Griggs and Sue Ingleby.
Freda started her career as a nursery nurse, then becoming a foster parent and later a residential house parent for teenagers. In 1982 Freda qualified as a social worker. Whilst working in a Child Guidance Centre she helped to develop the training programme, “Handling Children’s Behaviour” and since that time she has continued to run groups and train others using this programme. In 1988 Freda was appointed as social worker at a Child Development Centre. As part of her role Freda was responsible for supporting the families of children who had received a diagnosis of an autistic spectrum disorder. She has extensive experience of setting up parent support groups and running the “Handling Children’s Behaviour” programme, specially adapted for children with special needs.
Sue is a chartered educational psychologist with over 25 years’ experience of working within local education authorities. Before qualifying as an educational psychologist her experience was in teaching children with special educational needs. She has worked as a teacher in day and residential schools for children with social, emotional and behaviour problems. Sue was also involved in the early stages of the “Handling Children’s Behaviour “course and has run groups for parents in schools. Throughout her career she has had a special interest in autistic disorders, working with children and their parents, carers and teachers.
